Zip it Evelyn!

Lately Evelyn has taken to talking all the time! Or at least making some sort of noise constantly. Laughing, roaring, grunting, talking, giggling, ohh's, ahh's...you name it. This makes it very hard to talk to her when she is always talking too! So, when I needed to get something across to her the other night I decided to start off my conversation by telling Evelyn to "zip it". She immediately zipped her mouth and was ready for me to talk. I started to tell her that I wanted her to sit up at the table and eat her dinner. To which she responded..."how am I gonna eat with my mouth zipped?"

Smartie!

Evelyn's Red Room

The weeks have quickly passed since we moved into the new house. Cannot believe it has been a month now that we have been living there. About time for me to blog about Evelyn's Red Room!

Months before the house was even ready to be painted, Evelyn stated she wanted a red room. She also asked for her bathroom (which is actually the main bath) to be painted purple. While selecting colors at the store, Evelyn was with us, so we showed her several colors and let her pick. At first she selected the color called "Mickey's Pants" from the Behr Disney color collection. Everyone knows Mickey's pants are a brilliant bright red. Evelyn also selected a lavender color for the bathroom called "Glass Slipper" from the same Disney collection. While still looking at red paint colors, Evelyn changed her mind and selected a different red color name. If you ask me, it still should be called "Mickey's pants". Very Red. Very nice though.

New house and we are actually in it!!! Finally!

Well it is about time! Those reading the blog over the last 7-8 months have heard a lot about Evelyn's new house. Many asked, "When will you be in?". Our answer was always..."a few more weeks", because that is what we were told over and over by the crew. Well, that "few more weeks" turned into a "few more months", and finally we arrived at moving day. We moved in May 9, 2009! Yeah!

Evelyn's bedroom has two red walls and two white walls. Since Evelyn's bedspread already included pinks and other fun colors like yellow, green and purple, we incorporated all those colors into the red and white room she wanted so much! (Actually for two seconds she was disappointed that all four walls weren't red, yet when we explained that the painter ran out of paint...she was fine). Although that sounds like I was fibbing to my child, it is kind of true! The red paint took like 8 - 10 coats for only two walls! So truly, the painter had his fill of red color and quickly ran out of the original 2 gallons we thought was enough for only two walls!

Evelyn's bathroom is also the main bathroom of the house. She wanted it purple, so we selected a soft lavender color and it looks good. She is very happy.

The main part of the house is painted in variations of neutral khaki colors. Since the floor plan is very open, we needed the colors to compliment, not clash. Andy and I are really happy with the look of the kitchen cabinets, counter top, and island. Our bedroom is a light blue and white theme. Our bathroom, the laundry room, and the other upstairs bedroom are all a yellowish cream color. The flooring is brown twist carpet with flecks of other brown colors. The carpet is in the living room and all bedrooms. The bathrooms have beige tile. The kitchen, dinette, laundry and foyer all have wide plank wood with many color variations from blond to red to dark with a "distressed look".

Now, you are probably dying to see pictures of the house...after my detailed descriptions of room colors and flooring!! Ha ha!! Anyway, the pictures are coming! We have been so preoccupied with organizing the house, getting things into the house, starting to decorate, etc...that taking pictures or videos have been the last thing on our minds. Will do soon though!

Yeah...finally in our new house!

Ha ha...4 weeks??

Oh so funny! I know we haven't posted anything in months and you are probably asking what the heck we think is so funny. Ha ha...read the post right before this! The post was from February 6, 2009 and within the post I state that we should be in the house in about 4 weeks. That would have put the move in date around the beginning of April. WELL, that is the funny part! Maybe not truly funny in the comic sense, but funny in the ironic sense that it actually took twice that amount of time to have the house finished! We moved into the new house on May 9, 2009. So if you actually count up the weeks...4 weeks was obviously far from the mark. The good news is...we are in and loving it!

I would like to blame my lack of posting on being busy at work, busy with Evelyn, busy with the new house, etc...but I cannot. I have to blame my lack of posts on the fact that I was introduced to facebook in the beginning of January and have devoted too much time to that site. Thereby ignoring this blog. I am making a vow to not ignore blogging anymore, to publish more pics and stories of what is happening in our lives!

Here is a quick recap:
In February we went to The Great Wolf Lodge with friends.
In March we celebrated Evelyn's 4th birthday.
In April we went on a bowling fieldtrip with Evelyn's pre-school class.
In April Andy and I went to Dallas for an Audiology convention. Fun time.

I will try to post recent pictures highlighting the events of the missing blog months. Take care and be sure to tune in again soon to see if I keep to my blogging vow!

Fatherhood and teaching = Andy

I feel this message needs to be prefaced with a simple and completely honest comment. Andy is a wonderful father and teacher. We'll just have to remember, that everyone makes mistakes from time to time.

This evening Andy has been working with Evelyn on letters and words. Using a large MagnaDoodle, Andy has written down simple letters that Evelyn has easily identified and associated with the correct sound that the letter makes. It was all going so well, until...he started working on how the two letters...T and H...come together to make one sound...as in the word "the". Andy was explaining the sound combination to Evelyn by writing down the word "the". In his explanation he decided to use the word in a sentence to illustrate its use, function and sound. The problem came in the sentence he used. Andy said, "As in...Kick the cat."

My wide eyes and gasping sound quickly made Andy realize his mistake.

Andy continued to work on Evelyn recognizing/sounding out the word "the", but thankfully he used a different sentence. Evelyn kept sounding out T, then H, then the E sound. Andy kept asking her again and again, finally finding it frustrating after many trials. Finally Evelyn said she didn't want to play the game anymore. So Andy pulled out the "I'll give you a M&M for every time you say it right." Finally Evelyn said it correctly a few times, so she got her M&M's. The thing is, after she received the candy Andy wrote "the" down again. Before he could even show her the board and ask her...she immediately told Andy..."You ask yourself". Effectively ending his teaching session!
